Reversi

Reversi, also known as Othello is a fun strategy game yet quite simple to play. You play on an 8x8 square board. Similar to checkers, one side is white pieces and one side is black pieces. The sole objective of the game is to capture more pieces on the board before the space runs out.

The game starts with 4 pieces on the board. Two black and two white. You have to try and capture your foe’s pieces and flip them over to your color. The way to capture an enemy piece is by ensuring you have another piece at the end of the horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line you are trying to capture.

For instance, you are playing as white. There is a white piece on the Reversi board and just next to it are 3 black pieces in a line. When you place your white piece at the end of the line, you now can flip them over and have 5 white pieces total after you capture the 3.

However, in every move you make, you have to capture at least one piece. This makes the game slightly complicated as you cannot trick your opponent so easily. That means if there is no move that can capture a piece then you must pass your turn and your opponent will get another over. In addition, if your opponent also runs out of moves and says pass, the game ends right there.

It’s rare for Reversi to end in such a way but yes that is one possible outcome. As you continue to play the game, you’ll get better and better.

How to win at Reversi?

The game ends when the 8x8 board is full, one player forfeits, or both players say pass. In each scenario, the pieces on the board are counted and the player with more pieces wins the game. Reversi is easy but don’t get outsmarted! Think your moves through and plan ahead.
